| The 88 bus service – a Silverstone problem or not? |
The changes to the Northampton to Oxford bus service have led to a lot of correspondence and complaints in the Towcester and Brackley Advertiser but seem to have passed almost without comment in Silverstone.
For those who catch the bus in the centre of the village, the only noticeable change to the service is that the interval between buses to Oxford has increased from two to three hours and the journey takes a bit longer since it stops in more villages in Oxfordshire.
For those who previously would have caught the single bus from, say, the Cattle End stop, to Northampton, the choice is to walk into the centre of the village and have a one hourly service or to catch the bus from Oxford and change at Stocks Hill and be able to do this only every three hours. Such a person would also have to pay two lots of fares.
My own observation of the use of the buses in the past has been that a significant majority of the passengers have been people with bus passes. For them, the additional cost of getting two tickets doesn’t hit them directly in the pocket. It does, however, hit South Northants Council Tax payers, and that would include most of the bus pass holders, since South Northants Council will now be billed for two rather than one fare.
The bus service is still numbered as 88X for the whole route, so surely it should be possible for there to be an arrangement for people to purchase a through ticket valid on both buses; such an arrangement is the norm on rail journeys. However, this mess is not the fault of the bus drivers – please don’t take any frustration out on them! |
